As preeclampsia awareness month comes to a close, I reflect on my very own experience. I never imagined that it could be or would be me. Other than Ivy’s heart surgery, this was the scariest thing that I have ever gone through. I could have died.
I listened to my body but the doctors did not listen to me. This happens too often. I am so glad to have had another doctor whom I refer to as my angel, advocate for my treatment when I was too weak and unable to. Everyone isn’t so lucky. I am fortunate to have survived and be able to help spread awareness.
I encourage all expecting moms to know the symptoms of preeclampsia and to know your normal blood pressure range. In most cases, signs of preeclampsia are detected BEFORE birth/delivery but in rare cases like mine, it can develop AFTER. My symptoms were swelling of my legs and ankles, swelling of my face, severe headache, loss of peripheral vision, blackouts, and high blood pressure. Symptoms vary from person to person. Educate yourself and educate others.
